Vitamin D supplements may prevent millions of winter infections


The main function of Vitamin D is to regulate a specific amount of phosphate and calcium. Vitamin D is also important for the maintenance and growth of bones, muscles, and teeth.In children’s low level of Vitamin D can lead to rickets, in which bones become soft and weak. Whereas in Adults deficiency of Vitamin D can lead to Osteomalacia.

Vitamin D is important for muscle and bone health. A Survey conducted by Public health England concludes that people are not getting 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day. Within the UK more than 2 .5 million people have respiratory infections like flu or cold every year. National Health services England offers Vitamin D supplements free of charge for low-income families.

Vitamin D supplements play a vital role in preventing acute respiratory infections. The most common respiratory tract infection is cold. However other infection includes pneumonia, bronchitis, and infection of ears. Annually, more than 65% of the population is affected with one or more respiratory infection in UK.

The study also found that Vitamin D supplements can cut the proportion of people getting involved in such infections by more than 10%. Adrian Martineau, who lead the study said “Taking Vitamin D supplements on daily and weekly basis means that 3.25 million fewer people would get at least one acute respiratory infection in a year”.

So should we all take Vitamin D supplements? The effect of Vitamin D supplements in more effective in people who have the lowest level of Vitamin D. The supplementation of Vitamin D is also helpful for the people who are at high risk of the bone condition Osteomalacia.

It is essential for a certain population group to take at least 10 micrograms Vitamin D daily.  In order to take preventive action against musculoskeletal disorder, it is necessary to take Vitamin D supplement in autumn and winter months.
