Deep learning neural networks are becoming more impressive and complex each day. The thrive to understand these cognitive functions, problems, approaches, learning capacities has lead scientists towards artificial intelligence(AI). Now, however, scientists are pushing these algorithms capabilities to a whole new level – trying them to read human minds. By analyzing reverse-engineering signals sent by the brain, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have been working on an artificial intelligence that can read and interpret complex thoughts simply by looking at brain scans. The CMU scientists collect data from a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine. Then they feed that data into their machine learning algorithms. These machines locate and analyze the building blocks that brain uses to create complex thoughts. The latest research was led by CMU’s Marcel Just, the D.O. Hebb University Professor of Psychology in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He said;
“One of the big advances of the human brain was the ability to combine individual concepts into complex thoughts, to think not just of ‘bananas,’ but ‘I like to eat bananas in evening with my friends. We have finally developed a way to see thoughts of that complexity in the fMRI signal. The discovery of this correspondence between thoughts and brain activation patterns tells us what the thoughts are built of.”
Impressively, the scientists have been able to process 240 complex events which triggered brain functions. These include brain functions covering from individual to places and even various aspects of physical actions and social interactions. By understanding these triggers sent by brain, algorithms can be used to scan brain signals predicting what is being thought at that time. Later the algorithms connected these thoughts into a coherent sentence.
By feeding artificial intelligence with 239 of these complex sentences and corresponding brain scans, the algorithms successfully predict brain action with an astounding 87% accuracy. It could also operate in reverse. This could be done by receiving a sentence then showing output of an accurate image, and predicting how the thought would be mapped inside a human brain. Explaining his research method, latest Marcel Just said;
“Our method overcomes the unfortunate property of fMRI to smear together the signals emanating from brain events that occur close together in time, like the reading of two successive words in a sentence. This advance makes it possible for the first time to decode thoughts containing several concepts. That’s what most human thoughts are composed of.”
He added, “A next step might be to decode the general type of topic a person is thinking about, such as geology or skateboarding. We are on the way to making a map of all the types of knowledge in the brain.”
This astonishing research interprets just how far deep learning has come leading to the development of whole new technological empowerment era. If you were not worried about the rise of super powered machines, now that these machines can read minds, it is probably a start for the inevitable robot apocalypse.
