Activated Charcoal Becomes the Wellness World’s Favorite Detox Ingredient

Carbon has its more common name “Activated charcoal’ and that was even used by Hippocrates (400BC) and Pliny (50AD) for the treatment of epilepsy, chlorosis,  anthrax, and vertigo. Activated charcoal has now become the world’s detoxifying ingredient due to its majestic effects on human health, used as a natural treatment to remove deadly materials and venomous chemicals from our body so that body does not reabsorb them and remains defended.

Activated Charcoal

It works on the principle of adsorption not absorption. In the adsorption, process charcoal adsorbs chemicals on the surface as charcoal has tiny pores which carry negative charges and magnetizes positively charged poisonous bodies on its surface.

Activated charcoal has extensive variation of applications, some of them are as follows;

1. Removes stains, plaques and whitens the teeth

It’s actually astonishing to know that how ancient people keep their teeth white and clean, even though they didn’t use toothbrushes.  Then how?  They had carbon, Miswak etc.

Nowadays a lot of commercial brands of toothpaste are accessible in markets but we all know their poisonous, detrimental and baleful effects as they all hold chemicals and verified to be carcinogenic.

Fluorides, calcium carbonates, hydrated silica, antimicrobial agents, sodium hydroxide etc. all these cannot take off plaques from teeth but carbon can do that so unsoiled.

“I was super skeptical until I tried it—it’s quite messy, but it does strip away stains and plaque to make your teeth appear whiter,” says Joseph Banker, DMD, a New Jersey-based cosmetic dentist.

2.Activated charcoal beautifies skin and hair

Just rub charcoal on your precious skin and hair and you will see the outcomes of that mask. All this cure is natural and it will never add any chemical or noxious stuff on your skin.

While using as a face mask it drags out all the dirt from your skin and all the undesirable excessive oil and makes it smooth and cheeky.

Similarly, when you apply charcoal on your hair it works in the same manner just like on skin. It removes filth, oil, toxins, dandruff, redness etc.

When dirt and oil in your pores come in contact with the

       Carbon, they stick to it and then get washed away when

        you rinse”, explains cosmetic chemist Ni’kita Wilson.

Different makeup brand made up of carbon charcoal are convenient in markets, some are; Boscia (melter cleansing oil balm), BLAQ (black mask), BYE BYE PORES primer, Babe Charcoal Hand Wash etc.

3.Water filtration

Impure water is a major problem in this era. Activated charcoal can eliminate contamination from water too. Water is laden with different ammunition, fluorides, inorganic solvents, industrial wastes, pesticides etc. Throughout the world water filtration systems are using activated charcoal. It takes away all the blemishes from the water and makes it immaculate for use. When fluorides are detached then it is worthwhile for our kidney’s suitable functioning.

In England, between 1852 and 1858 large municipal carbon filters were built.

Miguel Toribio-Mateas, chairman of British association for applied nutrition and nutritional therapy said;

“Activated charcoal provides an effective means for the removal of chlorine and chlorinated by-products from water, as well as various types of sediments.”

4.Treatment of acute poisoning and drug overdose

Sometimes over dosage of drug disturbs stomach pumping. That does not come about very often. Activated charcoal operates as a detoxifying agent within an hour of poisoning; not over a lifetime accumulated intoxication. It works by adsorbing the poison or drugs from the digestive tract and hinders it from inscribing the body. It’s only supportive in case of certain prescriptive drugs like Tylenol not for all drugs.

According to university of Michigan Health System,

“50 to 100 grams activated charcoal is used in case of adults poisoning and 10 to 25 grams for children”

5.Maintaining cholesterol  level

Cholesterol is a chief culprit in all the heart diseases. Activated charcoal can help reduce cholesterol and lipid level in liver, heart, blood serum, and in brain.

British Journal Lancet reported a study on patients having high cholesterol. They were given activated charcoal three times a day. It reduced their total cholesterol 25%, lowered LDL cholesterol 41%, doubled their  HDL/LDL cholesterol ratio.

Kidney International Supplement suggested that;

charcoal may find applicability in the management of azotemic diabetic and nephrotic hyperlipidemia.”

Due to the innumerable benefits of activated charcoal, many companies have started using it in their products. For example New York City’s juice generation sells the lemonade, green juice, and almond milk drinks with a tablespoon of activated charcoal. Even icecreams, burgers and other foods are also having activated charcoal due to its detoxifying ability.charcoal
